Acoustical Ceiling Tiles
Acoustical ceiling tiles are specially formatted ceiling tiles designed to control sound within a given space. This is due to their unique construction. While most ceiling tiles are flat and full of pores, which is a poor way of controlling sound waves, acoustical ceiling tiles are crafted in designs that funnel and change the flow and shape of sound waves. Sound travels in waves. The transfer of sound waves occurs through the vibration of molecules. The sound that a person hears is due to the transference of energy from molecule to molecule. This sound radiates in all direction. Large enclosed spaces often need to manage how sound travels and is heard. Acoustical ceiling tiles can do this by being barriers or facilitators for the transference of sound.
These ceiling tiles can block the transference of sound due to their shape. Ceiling tiles that muffle noise are often beneficial to libraries or other enclosed spaces that rely on quiet and a peaceful environment. These tiles can provide this through their unique construction and composition. Often the way sound muffling tiles are created influences how sound is carried. Certain shapes and designs can trap sound or redirect away from the ground. Sound waves, in addition to radiating in all directions, also bounce back to their source. This is how sonar functions. Sound is sent out and depending on the amount of time it takes for it to bounce back determines the surrounding environment. Special tiles designed to muffle noise can redirect sound waves so that they do not return to their source. They instead are redirected to other parts of the building and away from whatever areas require quiet.
The opposite can also happen with sound focused ceiling tiles. Through their composition they can reflect sound back towards an audience. These tiles are usually present in auditoriums or concert halls. These venues require sound to be redirect specifically towards an audience. Amplified sound can also come through the construction materials used in these tiles. Hard surfaces without pores are good reflectors of sound. Materials that are soft and allow for the transmission of particles through it usually muffle sound and prevent an effective bounce back of sound waves. If you or your venue is in need of these special tiles they can be purchased at a variety of stores. They can be installed by industry professionals are can be put in place by you yourself. However, it is often advised to consult a contractor if you have little or no experience installing ceiling tiles.

can sound waves melt metal?
i am a 4th year electrical engineering student, and i'm trying to think of a research topic, as i posted a question earlier.
ive watched in a sci fi show that they used a sound/acoustic wave generator to melt a copper ore, i was wondering if it is really possible and if a sound wave can also melt other metal.
if not any other suggestion on what could be my research topic, anything related to engineering, or electricity.
(sorry for the long details) i could really use some help please:-)
I think i am going to say no on this one
Reason:
I had two twelve inch sub woofers with about 1200 watts amplification
this ended up to be about 115 dB of sound
I did not feel even the slightest amount of heat from the sound waves
Sure the speaker coil and the amp were warm but not from the sound waves
Even think of the loudest things(concerts, jet engines, and percussion from something falling)
Not much heat generated
To be honest i doubt sound waves could melt a popsicle without tons and tons of energy to amplify the sound waves
