I've been looking forward to Liam Neeson's latest thriller, the unknown, ever since I saw the trailer a few months ago. It reminded me of Taken (Neeson second film), one of the most surprising favorites in a couple of years ago, and anchored by compelling mystery storyline - biologist visits to Berlin with his wife and has an accident, and when he wakes up coma days later, another man took his life.
Is there a conspiracy at play here, or he has lost his mind? And what lengths they go to find the truth and take back their lives?
For the most part, unknown is progressing as expected. Nothing seems to make sense, and it keeps guessing whether what you see is real, imagined, or perhaps both. At the same time, activity, excitement and thrills, and lots of it. I can honestly say that I was interested.
Of course, Liam Neeson is brilliant, but the supporting cast is not too shabby either - Diane Kruger, january jones, Aidan Quinn, and Frank Langella. Each actor manages to put their stamp on their characters, even if only for air time.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (who directed the underrated Orphan) does a pretty good job here with some pretty ridiculous media (and I mean just how unlikely it is someone as attractive as Diane Kruger play the taxi driver).
Less capable hands, could easily have known spiraled out of control, but despite all the plot holes and unnecessary convolution in the liquidation of a mystery, the film manages to stay afloat and avoid a total disaster.
Usually, movies bizarre predicaments can only end in bitter disappointment. You'll usually riveted by the mystery, until you realize the truth, which is usually outrageous or stupid or both, and the film just completely undermined that moment. Surprisingly, the unknown resolution is about as good as you can get a movie like this. It is not necessarily credible, but considering how much it takes, it is at least the possibility of the kingdom.
