A lack of integrated control systems can harm firms
These days, many manufacturers rely on industrial automation and control systems in order to function. Without them, their operations would be rendered unmanageable and inefficient.
However, a lot of firms struggle because the systems they have in place are not integrated and coherent, it has been claimed. According to Gartner figures cited in a Financial Times article, many manufacturers own and operate between 25 and 50 plants globally.
Gartner's Simon Jacobson suggested that one of the greatest challenges facing companies with multiple factories is managing the complex and often "home grown" manufacturing systems that may have evolved over many years.
Because of the lack of coherence, these firms often find it difficult to form a single view concerning their operations.
The expert remarked: "Being demand-driven requires a capability to meet customer demand for products and services with right-first-time production, while eliminating high costs and mitigating risks."
He also noted that for many manufacturers, the complexity of their supply networks increases each year as a result of market demands, globalisation, regulations and outsourcing. Meanwhile, sometimes firms inherit multiple sites as a result of mergers and acquisitions.
One firm to have suffered as a result of a lack of unified industrial automation and control systems is L'oréal.
Speaking to the publication, its vice-president of industrial systems applications Morris Lenczicki said: "In our 37 plants, we had probably a dozen different systems - home grown in many cases."
However, the firm, which employs around 66,600 employees in 130 countries around the world, began moving towards a unified manufacturing system in 2003 and is still taking the process forward.
Commenting on this, Mr Lenczicki stated: "What we've noticed the most is that everybody is talking the same language, everybody is following best practices - which were built into the solution - and everybody has the same information."

How do I enable Wireless network connection in my Aspire 5630 notebook PC?
I installed XP Prof in my laptop (earlier it was Vista and the wireless was working good)and now the wireless connection is not working properly. If I install a Intel Pro Wireless driver I am not able to connect to the net ( Error says : Ethernet Controller not working properly) Now I have installed " Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller" driver and I am able to connect to the net through a cable but now the wireless is gone.
