Dispatch: Strickland's slot-machine scheme "half-baked"

Sunday, October 4, 2009

The Columbus Dispatch editors write:

Gov. Ted Strickland's half-baked slot-machine scheme appears to be dead for the current biennium. It should stay dead for good.

But Kathleen Burke, recently appointed as director of the Ohio Lottery Commission, has declared that she wants the commission to move forward with the plan for video lottery terminals at Ohio's seven horse racetracks, just as soon as all the lawsuits against this action are resolved.

That would be a waste of time.

Even if video slots were a good solution to Ohio's budget crunch, the state should have a better, smarter plan.

Strickland's approach was weak from the start.
