How does a radio's tuner knob work?
By what mechanism coordinates the tuner knob with the change in frequency? When you rotate the knob "X" degrees, what takes place to adjust the frequency accordingly?
I've seen four different types:
1. The knob connects directly to a dual variable capacitor. On old vacuum tube radios you can actually see the plates and how they mesh together. The capacitor is combined with an inductor to form an LC oscillator that changes frequency as you change the value of capacitor.
I have a radio that is less than five years old that uses this tuning method.
2. Just like #1 except there is a mechanical reduction so it takes multiple turns of the knob to rotate the varable capacitor.
I have a radio that is less than 10 years old that uses this tuning method.
3. The dial moves a "dial cord" that both moves a frequency indicator and a variable capacitor. Otherwise it works just like #1
4. The dial turns a digital encoder that sends pluses to a digital tuner. Since the circuit is digital, there doesn't have to be a direct relationship between "knob degrees" and frequency. For example, you can design it so the frequency changes more when you move the knob fast and then have a lower rate when you slow down to "fine tune" the station.
If a radio has a digital frequency display, it probably dial probably connects to a digital encoder.
